| Where did MinusOne come from? |
A few years ago, the management of a previous employer of Tom Kent, MinusOne's president, were closeted in the meeting room for a whole day. At day's end, there was a company wide meeting in that same room. The schedule for the next twenty four months ran across the white boards which lined three walls of the room, while four categories were listed vertically: management, programming, art and quality assurance. Periodically, across those months, there were positive numbers which represented hirings over the coming two years. There was '+1' to add one programmer the following month, '+2' for adding two artists the next, '+4'meant another four Q/A people that June, and so on. Halfway around the room, though, there was a small '-1' for programming the following March. "So who are you going to fire?" was the first question out of everyone's mouth. The management dismissed it, saying someone would be promoted then, but the idea had taken hold. The joke continued, a mistake would often be followed by an email saying, "Be careful or you could be '-1!'" Lunch conversations would revolve around what each person would do when they were '-1.' Tom decided when he was '-1,' he would start his own company to provide software and game development solutions. Recently, he took his oppurtunity and started MinusOne. |
